When Matthew was growing up, his parents, Carl and Pat Meier, emphasized the old-fashioned values: discipline, hard work, religion, education, and family togetherness. Matthew's faith was continued to be nurtured and strengthened as he attended St. Ann’s Catholic School in Kāne'ohe and St. Louis High School in Honolulu from 1983 to 1987. While at St. Louis High School he lettered all four years in football, basketball, and track.

As much of an athlete as he was, he was also both a scholar and a gentleman: a L.I.F.E. Delegate (L.I.F.E.: Living In Faith Experience - a summer program sponsored by the Marianist community where a team of incoming seniors and two moderators experience living as a Christian community with representative from other Marianist affiliated schools from Hawaii and California, developing skills as Christian leaders and commit themselves to foster the school’s faith community), and a friend to all he met. He exemplified what it meant to be a St. Louis Man (the spirit of the "St. Louis Man" stresses responsibility, community involvement, academic excellence and more), and his classmates and other school students and faculty members elected him The St. Louis Man for 1987 and honored him with his photo on the front and back covers of their yearbook.

Matthew's classmates continue to keep his memory alive by offering a Memorial Scholarship Fund honoring him (as well as other classmates whom have passed on before us).
